Summer Meals in Oklahoma are more than a program—they are a statewide collaboration.
Every summer, thousands of children across Oklahoma lose access to the school meals they depend on. But every year, communities across the state step up to meet that need. Schools, tribes, nonprofits, and local leaders come together with one shared mission: ensuring no child goes hungry when school is out.
At Hunger Free Oklahoma, we are proud to support and connect with this work—helping partners share resources, strengthen relationships, and build systems that make summer meals more accessible for families across the state.
Over the past three years, the Summer Meals Regional Convenings have evolved from simple training into a broader strategy to reach more children. These gatherings bring together schools, tribes, nonprofits, and community partners across Oklahoma to strengthen collaboration, share resources, and expand awareness of summer meal opportunities. Topics have included congregate and non-congregate meals, SNAP, afterschool meals, policy and advocacy, and community outreach strategies.
In 2026, the convenings expanded reach and deepened impact across Oklahoma.
We gathered in Elk City, Sallisaw, and Kingfisher, bringing together partners from public health, education, tribal nations, nonprofits, and local communities. Each convening reflected strong engagement and a shared focus on strengthening summer meal access.
This year’s participation reflected both growth and momentum:
- 76 total registered participants
- 60 attendees
- Representation across 38 counties
- 79% attendance rate, with 37 organizations outside the anti-hunger sector represented.
Beyond the numbers, 2026 stood out for the strength of connection in the room. New partners joined the conversation, existing relationships deepened, and collaboration became more intentional and action oriented. Discussions moved beyond ideas into implementation, with partners actively shaping solutions for their communities.
This year made one thing clear: when we expand the table, we expand the impact.
Why This Work Matters
The Summer Meals Regional Convenings have shown that strong summer meal programs are built on strong partnerships. Over time, this work has expanded access to meal sites, improved communication and coordination, increased cross-sector collaboration, strengthened support for rural and tribal communities, and built a more connected and resilient statewide network.
What began as regional gatherings has evolved into a statewide movement grounded in collaboration. Today, it represents a connected network of partners across systems and communities, all working toward a shared goal: ensuring Oklahoma children have consistent access to the food they need year-round.
This growth is reflected in the data. While the number of sites and sponsors declined, from 733 sites and 237 sponsors in 2023–2024 to 664 sites and 219 sponsors in 2024–2025, the overall impact increased. Meals served rose from more than 3 million to over 3.5 million, with daily participation exceeding 58,000. As this work continues, one truth remains clear: its strength comes from the partnerships behind it, moving Oklahoma closer to a hunger-free future.
