Federal Updates

Federal Budget

Federal funding for fiscal year (FY) 2025 expires on September 30, and Congress is still negotiating funding for FY 2026. Republican lawmakers are considering a short-term continuing resolution (CR) until November 20, a year-long CR through FY 2026, or a possible government shutdown if an agreement is not reached. However, Congressional Democrats are threatening to withhold votes for the CR and pushing for an alternate deal that extends government spending approval for four weeks, expiring on October 31, that includes demands to extend health insurance subsidies and rolling back aspects of the One Big Beautiful Bill that passed over the summer. A government shutdown would impact all non-essential discretionary spending programs, such as WIC.

USDA to End Annual Food Insecurity Measurement

The USDA recently announced that it will no longer conduct annual household food insecurity surveys. This crucial data, collected for the past 30 years, has helped the USDA design, evaluate, and manage many food and nutrition assistance programs. Read Hunger Free Oklahoma’s statement here.
