March is a month of growth, renewal, and a renewed focus on ensuring our communities have access to nutritious meals. That’s why we’re so excited to celebrate National CACFP Week March 16-22, and to announce the release of our highly anticipated Afterschool Meals Report!
What is CACFP Week?
National CACFP Week, sponsored by the National CACFP Sponsors Association, is an annual education and information campaign designed to raise awareness about the USDA’s Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). This vital program combats hunger by bringing healthy foods to tables across the country for children in childcare centers, homes, and afterschool programs, as well as adults in day care.
The CACFP is critical for so many Oklahomans, and we’re proud to support its mission. This year’s theme, “Trying New Foods!” is a fantastic opportunity to introduce children to a variety of healthy and delicious options.
How You Can Participate in CACFP Week:
- Spread the Word: Help us raise awareness about the CACFP in your classrooms, community, and at the state level. The National CACFP Sponsors Association has great resources available on their Campaign page.
- Get Social: Participate in the Social Media Challenge! Share your #CACFPCreditable snacks and stories online. Click here for more information.
- CACFP Week in Action: Share how you’re participating in CACFP Week by submitting your story to CACFP Week in Action here.
Our Afterschool Meals Report: Coming in March!
To further highlight the importance of accessible nutrition, we are thrilled to announce that we will be releasing our Afterschool Meals Report in March, coinciding with CACFP Week! This report will detail the statistics and findings from the 2022-2023 school year, as well as provide tips on advocating for legislation, such as an updated Child Nutrition Reauthorization, which could streamline both Summer and Afterschool Meal Programs and improve area eligibility requirements. We believe this report will be a helpful resource for school districts, community organizations, and policymakers as we work together to end food security in Oklahoma.
Why Afterschool Meals Matter
Afterschool meals are a crucial component of the CACFP, providing children with the nourishment they need to learn, grow, and thrive, especially when school is out. These meals not only fill a nutritional gap but also support academic success and overall well-being.
