Food is Medicine: Best Practices and Evaluation Considerations for Clinic-Community Partnerships
This presentation will highlight the lessons learned and early results from a foundation-supported Food is Medicine pilot project centered on six safety-net clinics in Kansas and the diverse communities in which they work. This is one of the first known FIM projects in the country to include rural and frontier communities and their unique food system and food security challenges. Presentation will focus on the importance of planning, realities of implementation, considerations for evaluation, and the equally important roles of the healthcare system as well as community-based organizations.

Oklahoma’s local agriculture is at a pivotal point where demand for local food has continued to grow, heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Small scale agribusinesses— consisting of beginning and small-scale agriculture entrepreneurs—and the markets they serve have demonstrated a need for further support and resources as they navigate Oklahoma’s burgeoning local food system. The ONIE Project along with many partners established the Oklahoma Local Ag Collaborative to begin meeting these needs. The partnerships through OLAC provide necessary support and formal organization to Oklahoma’s local food system. In this session you will learn about OLAC’s impact on the local food system. Along with a first hand experience from Sheila DeCarlo with Thinkability Inc. on how OLAC has supported food access in their community.
